This week, the world celebrated the release of the Raspberry Pi 4: the miniature computer that is known for being a versatile tool of innovation. In appreciation, we’ve compiled three of our favorite uses of the Raspberry Pi:

  1. In California, Adarash Ambati realised that the average American household is wasting a whopping 25% of their total water usage on over-watering and ineffective watering methods. He leveraged the power of IoT computing to set up a sensor activated smart sprinkler system, which integrates local weather forecasts to ensure that as little water was wasted as possible. Using the Raspberry Pi, he was able to build a prototype for around $50 – significantly cheaper than most irrigation systems.
  2. Nick Brewer created the Pix-E, a disposable camera that creates animated GIF files, powered by the Raspberry Pi. It uses a Pi Camera module and a custom build complete with shutter and a battery pack. A little software wizardry via tools such as PiCamera, GraphicsMagick, and GifCam and – hey presto! – homemade GIFs that can then be easily processed and shared.
  3. Using a Raspberry Pi in a single location to enable 2-node high availability at up to 1,000 edge sites. StorMagic SvSAN is the lightweight virtual SAN solution that makes storage simple for thousands of customers across the globe. The solution is deployed across two nodes, with a separate witness that ensures that the sites remain online, even in the case of total node failure. Some SvSAN customers are running a centralized witness for multiple sites, from a single Raspberry Pi.

You can find out more about how you can harness the lightweight power of the SvSAN witness here.

We love the Raspberry Pi so much we even made an infographic of this blog post – you can check it out here.
