I don’t know about you, but we keep getting caught up in exciting news stories, with bold headlines that read ‘The Cloud is Dead, the Edge is Taking Over’. Awesome! StorMagic replaces everyone’s cloud storage with edge storage, we all become millionaires and retire at 40.
In reality, there is no big face off between the cloud and the edge. What we will see is the cloud shifting to meet the edge. The emergence of micro datacenters at the edge will expand the cloud further than the large cloud datacenters, which we currently associate with cloud storage.
Networks of micro datacenters will stretch the cloud to merge with the technologies associated with the growth of edge computing. The future of storage will be less about the edge displacing the cloud and more about connecting and harnessing the two.
But will it work?
StorMagic and Citrix are already joining the forces of the edge and the cloud, on a smaller scale. Earlier in the year, we announced the launch of the StorMagic Citrix cloud connector, which connects the Citrix hybrid cloud to StorMagic software-defined storage. This allows highly available Citrix cloud workloads to run at the edge.
While this technology is currently used for remote or branch sites that require virtualized user desktops and/or remote access management capabilities to run on premises instead of in a corporate datacenter, there is no reason why it could not be harnessed to connect the edge to micro datacenters in the future.
