Based in Oregon, Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort offers visitors skiing, snowboarding, and panoramic views from its 7,300-foot elevation. The resort was previously utilizing a physical SAN appliance to manage its point-of-sale transactional data. They decided to update and virtualize their IT environment with HPE StoreVirtual, which was later discontinued.

Earlier this year, StorMagic’s SvSAN virtual SAN software was recognized by HPE as an ideal replacement for HPE’s retiring StoreVirtual solution, so Mt. Hood decided to make the switch. During the migration, Mt. Hood Meadows discovered that StoreVirtual VSAs required three servers for high availability, compared to StorMagic’s two-server requirement, which enabled them to reduce their physical hardware and associated costs by 33 percent. SvSAN also made it easy to integrate an SSD caching tier into their environment, and a simultaneous multi-path IO, which increased the performance of all of Mt. Hood’s applications.

Mt. Hood Meadows chose StorMagic for three primary reasons: SvSAN’s rich features, the solution’s competitive price point, and the company support team’s vast knowledge and fast response time,” said Paul Thomson, director of information technology, Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort. “StorMagic support is the best that we have experienced with any virtual SAN provider. The StorMagic team is extremely knowledgeable, engaging, quick to respond and helpful, even with the smallest details.”

Key benefits realized since installation include:

  • Reduced Hardware Dependency: Mt. Hood Meadows initially eliminated the need for a large physical SAN, and later was able to reduce their new virtualized configuration from a three-server solution to just two servers, thanks to SvSAN’s lightweight requirements.
  • StoreVirtual Replacement: SvSAN is available as a validated, end-to-end solution, through HPE and HPE-authorized resellers, and as a replacement for StoreVirtual. SvSAN is specifically designed to simplify edge sites, enabling high availability using any two HPE servers. It is a lightweight virtual SAN, which complements the HPE ProLiant and Edgeline ranges.
  • Competitive Price Point: SvSAN dramatically lowers costs by eliminating physical SANs, and converging compute and storage into a lightweight commodity server footprint. A complete 2-node cluster can be purchased for less than $10,000.
  • Exceptional Support: Mt. Hood Meadows found StorMagic’s technical services and support team to be knowledgeable and responsive, and even noted they were the best virtual SAN industry support team they’ve encountered.
