Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2 and S3 are two popular cloud computing products, which run applications and store data within the cloud. The security of the data and applications held by Amazon can be enhanced through the use of AWS’ native encryption and key management features. However, this means allowing Amazon to hold both the encrypted data, and the keys to access that data, going against standard key management best practices.
Why integrate SvKMS with AWS?
By separating the keys from the encrypted data in AWS, organizations can retain much greater control over their data and the keys themselves. This concept is known as separating the lock from the key. While the ‘lock’ – the encrypted data – is held by Amazon, the keys are separated and controlled by another management interface. Any malicious threat that attempts to access the data in AWS can therefore not access the keys to decrypt the data.
StorMagic SvKMS is an encryption key management product that enables the separation of lock and key. Amazon Web Services users can integrate StorMagic SvKMS with their cloud storage through the use of the bring your own key (BYOK) method. SvKMS is fully compatible with both EC2 and S3.
