What Is Digital Asset Management?

Digital Asset Management (DAM) is the process of storing, finding, retrieving, sharing and organizing digital assets (i.e. images, videos, audio, documents). DAM solutions are software-based systems that help organizations manage their digital assets, through a central and controlled platform. They allow operations to be performed on data files, in a safe and secure manner, to ensure that data is not lost.

How Does Digital Asset Management Work?

Traditional file systems are no longer adequate for organizing digital assets, as the data is typically unstructured and there are far too many files to manage. Organizations need to be able to find and retrieve their files quickly and efficiently, which is why they’re deploying digital asset management solutions.

These systems help organizations locate their files with ease, by tagging each digital asset with unique metadata. Through the use of metadata, DAM solutions enable organizations and specific departments to find their digital assets quickly and easily, without having to sort through complex hierarchical storage structures and recall specific file names.

When a digital asset is created, it must be indexed, or assigned a unique metadata tag, that labels the file with a detailed description. That metadata is then used to help make that asset findable, retrievable and usable. Once tagged, a digital asset is made searchable and discoverable to an organization – all one has to do is search for the file within the DAM database.

Another important function of digital asset management solutions is storage optimization. Organizations often incorporate multiple different primary and secondary storage media into their IT infrastructure. They reserve the primary storage (i.e. hard disks, SSDs), which is often higher performing and more expensive, for active files that they need frequent, real-time access to. Secondary storage media (i.e. tape, optical, cloud) are used to store or archive files that are utilized less often. Digital asset management solutions often include the functionality to automatically move files to different tiers of storage, based on how often they’re accessed or other user-defined policies, to ensure optimal performance and cost savings.

What Are the Benefits of Digital Asset Management?

While there are many benefits to consider when deploying a digital asset management system, some of the more important include:

StorMagic ARQvault and Digital Asset Management

StorMagic ARQvault is the industry’s first Active Intelligent Repository. A one-of-a-kind digital asset management solution, ARQvault enables organizations to gather data from anywhere, store it forever, and find it fast.

While there are many different DAM solutions on the market, StorMagic ARQvault is unique in that it is active, intelligent, and affordable. Unlike any other solution, it combines digital asset management (DAM), media asset management (MAM), video asset management (VAM), and storage asset management (SAM) all into a simple, easy to use platform.

ARQvault is a collection of vaults that come together to create a federated repository. The software solution combines different and distributed storage resources into an integrated system, shared across the network.

ARQvault is active because it knows where digital assets are located at all times, allowing users to search for, find, and retrieve assets quickly. It is intelligent because it uses policies to automatically move data to different storage tiers, creates low-resolution proxies of high-resolution video, audio, and image files for fast search, playback, and viewing, and uses metadata for rich data analysis. By automatically moving digital assets to any type of storage, anywhere, ARQvault can save customers 50% on storage costs.
