HPE Is Retiring StoreVirtual… Are You Prepared For What Comes Next?

StoreVirtual reaches End of Service Life on October 31, 2022. When HPE announced they would be retiring their solution back in 2019, it stirred up many questions from its users who relied heavily on the StoreVirtual product for the normal functioning of their organization, as well as the potential customers considering the solution.

Naturally many wondered “Will there be another viable solution available that takes its place?” And “Will any replacement meet my requirements, still fit within my current budget and be easy to implement?”

If you’re asking these questions, be reassured that you’re not alone. Learning that a product you rely heavily on is coming to its end of life can be highly stressful, especially when you’re feeling unaware and unprepared for what to expect next.

For answers to these questions, and a full run-down on StoreVirtual’s EoSL and what you should expect next, keep reading.

When is StoreVirtual retiring? And what happens after it does?

The official HPE support page states that StoreVirtual will reach the EoSL milestone on October 31, 2022. This means that the product, its support, shared storage, and other associated services will all be permanently retired after that date.

Customers currently using the StoreVirtual solution will need to look to other vendors to continue to ensure the safety and integrity of their data, as well as continue to experience the benefits of using a shared storage solution.

What solutions will be put in place to replace StoreVirtual?

As it stands, after StoreVirtual retires, there will not be any HPE solutions released as a replacement for the solution.

However, in March 2020, StorMagic joined the HPE Complete program, ensuring that SvSAN can be procured directly through HPE, making SvSAN the perfect replacement for its retiring StoreVirtual solution. This means that current StoreVirtual customers can move over to SvSAN easily, and without disruption. StoreVirtual customers migrating to SvSAN also benefit from:

  • Significantly less strain on your networking bandwidth, memory, and processing power than with StoreVirtual
  • A virtual SAN solution that was built for the edge, able to tolerate poor and unreliable networks (>3,000 ms RTT)
  • The knowledge that your data is always kept safe with SvSAN’s synchronous mirroring.
  • Savings of 33% on hardware and running costs using just two nodes vs StoreVirtual’s three, and even more for customers using existing hardware.

StorMagic SvSAN has helped organizations from around the globe achieve 100% uptime, without having to break the bank to do so (check out Mt. Hood Meadow’s story for more information on how). It’s also easy to implement, allowing you to use your existing architecture, or brand new hardware if you choose! And it allows users to support up to a thousand sites as easily as one using just a single witness node.
